2008 Hungary

Bilingual |

Every time I think about the trip to Budapest, it always put a big smile on my face. The weather was quite chilly when I was there, but personally, I enjoyed that type of weather better. The first day I got there, it was a wet, cold and cloudy day. To me, that was the stereotype of European weather. I was hoping to see snow for the first time of my life. However, according to the locals, it doesn't snow a lot in Budapest, Christmas in 2007 was actually the first white Christmas for the last 5 or 10 years, it stopped snowing a few weeks before we arrived...  what pissed me off more is that the last day I was there, it got so cold that my head hurt even with a warm hat, but not cold enough for snowing... When I got back to Taiwan and checked the broadcast, Budapest was covered in white snow...

Eastern Europe is a place that is easy to get attached to. Gorgeous historical buildings, gorgeous looking people(hee hee...), lower expense compare to the other areas in Europe, plus people are friendlier there, too! If you have been to Budapest, you would find out that the city is actually combined with two parts, which are "Buda" & "Pest", divided by the Danube. Buda is the old part, most of the major historical sights are here. If you wish to stay on this side, I would highly recommend Carlton Hotel, decent & reasonably priced. The other side of the Danube is the modern part, Pest. Mass transportation is a lot more convenient on this side, if you are more into night scene, you definitely have to stay on the Pset side, otherwise it would be a bit difficult to get around after 10 p.m. (Plus you can only find 24-hour shop on the pest side...)

Budapest has an old and efficient subway system. There are three line, Blue, Red and Yellow. It's quite easy to get to most of the sights with the subway system or sometimes a transfer by bus or city train. Budapest is quite a tourists friendly city I think. Even if you are new to Budapest, with a lonely planet (or a map from the hotel or tourist center) on your hand, you will find your way easily. There is one more things, for those who are staying in Budapest for more than two days, you must consider buying the Budapest Card, it's quite a bargain!
